Free HSK Practice Tests (All Levels 1–9) — Real Format, Instant Scoring
A real practice test is the fastest way to find your true HSK level and see exactly what to study next. These free mock exams use the official format, score instantly, and explain every answer.
Free HSK practice tests are available for every level, from HSK 1 (≈300 words) through the new HSK 3.0 advanced bands (7–9). HSK University's tests use real exam formats, score instantly, and explain every wrong answer — so you know exactly what to study next, not just your score. Take one free with no payment required, then re-test every few weeks to track your progress.
Most free "HSK tests" online are just static quizzes with no scoring, no explanations, and the wrong number of questions. That tells you almost nothing. A useful mock exam does three things: it matches the real test's structure and timing, it scores you against the actual passing threshold, and it shows you why each answer was right or wrong so the test itself becomes a lesson.
Which HSK test should you take first?
If you're not sure of your level, start one level below where you think you are — it's more motivating to pass and then move up than to be overwhelmed. As a rough guide:
- Just started / know a few hundred words → HSK 1 or HSK 2
- Can hold a simple conversation → HSK 3
- Comfortable with daily topics, reading paragraphs → HSK 4
- Reading articles, following the news → HSK 5–6 (or HSK 3.0 bands 5–6)
Whatever you pick, your score tells you immediately whether to go up, down, or keep drilling that level.

What's actually on the HSK test?
The current HSK exam has a listening section and a reading section at every level, with a writing section added from HSK 3 upward. Under the new HSK 3.0 standard, a speaking section becomes mandatory from Band 3, and the advanced bands add translation. Here's the structure of the current HSK 3 as an example:
| Section | Questions | Approx. time | Max points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening (听力) | 40 | ~35 min | 100 |
| Reading (阅读) | 30 | ~30 min | 100 |
| Writing (书写) | 10 | ~15 min | 100 |
| Total | 80 | ~90 min | 300 |
Lower levels (HSK 1–2) are listening and reading only. For the full breakdown of the new nine-level system, see our HSK 3.0 guide.
How is the HSK scored, and what counts as a pass?
At HSK 3 and below, sections are added together and 180 out of 300 (60%) is a pass — a strong section can offset a weaker one, with no separate per-section minimum. From HSK 4 up, the same 60%-overall logic applies to that level's total. Our mock exams score you against these real thresholds instantly, so you always know whether you'd pass today.
Paper vs digital mock test
The official HSK is offered both on paper and on a computer, and the two feel different: the digital test involves on-screen reading and typing pinyin, while paper involves handwriting characters. If you'll sit the internet-based test, practicing digitally matters — screen reading is slower for most people until they're used to it. Our mock exams run in the browser, which mirrors the digital experience closely.
What makes these practice tests different
- Real exam format and timing — the same section structure and pacing as the official test, not a random quiz.
- Every wrong answer explained — an AI tutor tells you why the correct answer is correct, turning the test into a lesson.
- Weak-spot loop — your misses feed straight into targeted review, so your next study session hits exactly what you got wrong.
- Instant, honest scoring — scored against the true passing threshold, with your section-by-section breakdown.
How 41,000 learners prep for HSK 3.0
Across HSK University's 41,000+ monthly learners, the pattern that works is simple and repeatable: study a level's vocabulary list with spaced-repetition flashcards, drill listening daily, then take a full mock exam under timed conditions before test day. Re-testing every few weeks turns an abstract goal ("pass HSK 4") into a moving number you can watch climb.

-
Is there a free HSK 3.0 practice test?

What score do you need to pass the HSK?
At HSK 3 and below you need 180 out of 300 (60%). The three sections are added together, so there's no separate per-section minimum — a strong listening score can offset weaker writing.
-
How many practice tests should I take before the real exam?
Aim for at least 3–5 full, timed mock exams before test day. That's enough to train pacing and stamina and to reveal which section is dragging your score down while there's still time to fix it.
