25 questions in 4 parts. You read Chinese on the page and answer from it. Recognising a word in characters is a different skill from recalling it from pinyin, and this section only tests the first.

Sit the HSK 2 mock test

Our HSK 2 mock test runs the same 60 questions in the same order as the real paper, with the audio built in. It marks itself as soon as you finish and breaks your score down by section, so you can see which part of the paper is costing you marks.

The full mock test is free and you can retake it as often as you like — you need a free account to sit it, because your answers and your score have to be saved somewhere. On the free plan you get your full score and a worked explanation of your first mistake; explanations for the rest of your mistakes, and the shorter targeted practice sets, are part of the paid plan.

Before you book the real exam

• Work through the HSK 2 word list until you recognise every word in characters, not pinyin.
• Read the HSK 2 grammar points — they are what the reading section is built on.
• Sit the mock test under real conditions: 55 minutes, no dictionary, no pausing the audio.
